"As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, 'Don’t cry.' Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, 'Young man, I say to you, get up!' The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God."

Jesus was filled with compassion and love for the sick, the injured, the weak, the poor and for everyone He met. Here, in these verses, He saw the sorrow of a mother that had lost her only son and, knowing that she was also a widow, He felt great compassion for her. Instead of standing aside and doing nothing, Jesus comforted her first by saying “Don’t cry” and then proceeding to restore life to her son. Jesus saw the need and reacted immediately with comforting words and miraculous action. Our lesson here is to learn to react, with the love of God, whenever we recognize the need. Extending the compassion of Christ with our actions, our words and our prayers.
